SIBO Product Buyer’s Guide (updated November 2024)

Amy Myers MD Microb-Clear Review

Amy Myers MD is a renowned functional medicine company founded by Dr. Amy Myers, a physician known for her expertise in autoimmune diseases and thyroid health. The company was founded in Austin, Texas, and although it has only been selling supplements in the healthcare industry since 2017, it has been incredibly successful, and now sells an extensive range of products. Microb-Clear is one of their best-sellers, and was formulated to promote balanced levels of gut microorganisms. Each bottle comes with 120 capsules which comes out to a two month supply.

We were happy to see that this product is manufactured in the USA and has GMP certification but it’s ultimately the formula that gets you the results, so does this product have what it takes?

Is Amy Myers MD Microb-Clear Effective?

Amy Myers MD is a well-known, successful supplement brand and therefore we had certain expectations regarding their SIBO product. Microb-Clear was designed to address gut dysbiosis by targeting the harmful bacteria residing in the small intestine. Through its formula of herbal extracts, essential fatty acids, and minerals, Microb-Clear was created to eliminate these bacteria as well as to encourage a harmonious balance of microorganisms throughout the small intestinal tract and colon, thereby fostering optimal gut health.

We expected to see effective amounts of Berberine and Caprylic acid in the formula, and were not disappointed. These are two of the essential ingredients that have been proven to deliver the best health benefits for those who have SIBO. The formula contains an impressive 200mg of Berberine Sulfate extract (40:1) to kill microorganisms, and 200mg Caprylic acid – not as much as the 300mg in our top-recommended supplement, although it has been paired with a 300mg dose of a second fatty acid, N-Acetyl Cysteine (also known as NAC). While this biofilm disruptor could be beneficial for certain types of SIBO, and SIBO-related symptoms, we could not uncover any solid research that points to NAC being better to tackle SIBO than Caprylic acid.

The botanical ingredients in Amy Myers MD’s formula are a combination of Black Walnut Hull and Sweet Wormwood. While we applaud the inclusion of natural herbal elements, Microb-Clear didn’t manage to fully satisfy our expectations with the specific herbal choices made. The formula would have been much more powerful and effective if Oregano and Garlic had been chosen instead, because these antimicrobials have more potent, targeted antibacterial effects. We would have also preferred to see a higher dose of herbs, because 120mg of Black Walnut and Sweet Wormwood combined is not even close to the optimal doses found in our #1 product, such as 500mg Oregano. Furthermore, we were disappointed to see that the herbs are contained in a proprietary blend. This is not ideal because the specific dosages of the individual ingredients are obscured, making it difficult for consumers to assess the effectiveness and safety of the product. It also demonstrates a lack of transparency on the part of the company.

One of the best indicators of how well a product will work is the feedback from people who have used it, so we turned to actual customer testimonials to see what people really thought about Microb-Clear and whether they would recommend it or not. We found that the majority of customers who wrote reviews were satisfied with this product. Some customers were impressed that Microb-Clear helped to clear up their symptoms within the first few days of using it, and others commented positively on its ability to alleviate their gas, bloating, digestion issues and bowel movements.

Is Amy Myers MD Microb-Clear Safe?

In general, this product is marketed as natural and safe. There are no mentioned side effects, and it is made in accordance with the standard GMP practices. That said, Amy Myers MD warns that you should consult with your doctor or allergist first if you are allergic to tree nuts, as Microb-Clear contains an extract from black walnut hulls. As a general rule, it is always recommended to speak to your health care practitioner before taking any new supplement, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, have any health conditions, or are taking other medications.

Summary

Amy Myers MD had an interesting design for their SIBO supplement. They had some of the most recommended ingredients to tackle the main symptoms of SIBO, and some potent doses too, particularly with regards to Berberine and the fatty acids. They also added three minerals to their formula which could provide extra benefits for a healthy gut microbiome. We like that Micorb-Clear is GMP compliant and third-party tested. Together with an excellent 90-day return guarantee and mainly positive testimonials from customers, we were left feeling satisfied that Microb-Clear is a good second-place natural SIBO supplement.

However, we were left questioning the company’s choice of herbal antimicrobials, especially as they were lumped together in a proprietary blend, and because the Black Walnut would probably make it off-limits to those with tree-nut allergies. We would have appreciated more transparency regarding the herbal blend, and the disclosure of the percentage of any beneficial compounds. In addition, it doesn’t contain any bioavailability enhancer, so while it may be an effective SIBO supplement, there is room for improvement.
